Top-Rated Outdoor Gyms for Strength Training
Finding high-quality outdoor gym equipment can transform your workout. Here is my ranking of the best spots for calisthenics and functional fitness:
- Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park: Features professional-grade equipment with clear instructional signage for a gym-quality experience.
- Valentines Park: An exceptional location for calisthenics, boasting a wide range of bars specifically for pull-ups, dips, and core work.
- Central Park: Standout feature includes free "swing fitness" weight boxes, sponsored by Nuffield Health and unlocked through the Swing Fitness app, which not every park has, perfect for those wanting functional weight training outdoors.
- Stratford Park: Recently upgraded with a variety of modern resistance equipment suitable for a complete full-body routine.
- West Ham Park: Included for one reason: it has free-to-use "swing fitness" weight boxes, sponsored by Nuffield Health and unlocked through the Swing Fitness app, which not every park has. The rest of the gym is basic and the pull-up bar is set very low, so come for the weights, not the bars. It sits next to the tennis courts and the cricket area.
Best Children's Playgrounds for Family Fitness

Park Facts at a Glance
Hours, prices and facilities change, so each park below links to its official page. These details were checked against those pages on 14 October 2026. Where a council page does not state something, such as opening hours, it is left out.
- Valentines Park (Ilford): Vehicle entrances are on Melbourne Road, Perth Road and Cranbrook Road. The council lists an outdoor gym, two free children's play areas, free tennis, a basketball court, a multi-use games area, a cricket pitch for hire, rowing boats on the lake and two cafés. Parkrun and Walking for Health sessions also run here. Official park page.
- West Ham Park (Newham, managed by the City of London): The City of London lists a free outdoor gym, open daily from 7:30am until dusk, with no booking needed. Its page names 14 pieces of equipment, including a pull-up bar, assisted pull-up, lat pull-down, leg press, shoulder press, dumbbells and kettlebells. Dogs are not allowed in the gym area. In my experience the pull-up bar is set very low, so it is not one of the better gyms for bar work, but the free Swing Fitness weight boxes (sponsored by Nuffield Health) are a real advantage because not every park has them. It sits next to the tennis courts and the cricket area. Official outdoor gym page.
- Lloyd Park (Walthamstow): Forest Road, E17 4PP. The council lists an outdoor gym, grass and synthetic bowling greens (fees apply), free basketball practice areas, free outdoor table tennis, a petanque court, a skate park and scooter park, and a play area with a sandpit plus a natural play area. The Aveling Centre café is open daily, and there is a pay and display car park by the main entrance on Forest Road, reached via Bedford Road. Official park page.
- Victoria Park (Bow): Grove Road, E3 5TB. The park opens at 7am and closes at dusk, 365 days a year. The splash pool is open from 11am to 5pm every day from the Spring Bank Holiday until the last weekend of the school summer holidays, and is switched off when it rains. Dogs are not allowed in the children's play areas. Official park page.
- Raphael Park (Romford): Main Road, RM2 5EB. The park is open from 8am until dusk. It has twelve tennis courts, a large fenced play area in the north of the park, an ornamental lake, and toilets at Raphael's Restaurant and Millie's Kiosk. There is no outdoor gym. A pay and display car park is near the Main Road entrance, and buses 174, 498, 347 and N86 serve the park. Official park page.
- Wanstead Flats (Epping Forest): Car parks are at Jubilee Pond (E7 0EA) and Centre Road (E7 0EF). The City of London lists football pitches, health walks and parkruns. There are no toilets or refreshments nearby, so plan a comfort break beforehand. Official park page.
Seasonal Training & Outdoor Conditions
- Spring & Summer: During peak months, heading to Olympic or Victoria Park in the early morning is the best way to avoid crowds and high temperatures.
- Autumn: Wanstead Park and Hollow Ponds provide breathtaking, tree-lined paths that are perfect for scenic cardio and photography.
- Winter: Central and Stratford Parks are the best choices for the shorter days, as they feature reliable public lighting for safer evening workouts.
Personal Trainer Expert Recommendations
